VFW Post 212 and its Frances Sherman VFWA announced the 2021-2022 Patriot’s Pen student essay contest winners.
Maranda Davis, 12, a 7th grader attending Floyd C. Fretz Middle School, was the first place winner. She has moved on to the district level for judging.
The daughter of Mark and Mandi Wilton Davis, Maranda was a member of the Fretz Lady Owls basketball team. She also participates in junior bowling and BRLL softball as well as being on the yearbook committee at Fretz. Her hobbies are reading, arts and crafts and playing with her dog, Beau.
The second place winner was Rylie Baldwin. She attends Fretz Middle School and is a daughter of Keri Baldwin. Rylie loves sports and plays soccer for Fretz. She is also an accomplished baker, owning and operating her own small business, ‘Rylie’s Flour Shop’, at home and online. She often donates baked goods or money to causes related to school and/or the community.
The third place winner is Lindsy Claypool, 12, a 7th grader attending Fretz Middle School. She is the daughter of Kimberly Wonderly and stepdaughter of Ethan Peterson. Lindsy is Captain of the Fretz cheerleading squad. She is active in dance at the Starlight Dance Connection and in softball, plays clarinet and flute in Fretz band and is in the choir. Lindsy also enjoys hunting, fishing, her dog, friends and family.
Monetary awards will be given to the top three on Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at VFW Post 212, 94 Barbour St.
