State troopers in McKean County made more arrests for drugs than DUI in the last year, according to a database of crime statistics.
Between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, the Lewis Run barracks of state police investigated 325 drug offenses and 200 DUIs. While multiple charges can come from one arrest — like possessing unstamped cigarettes or drug paraphernalia found in a DUI traffic stop — a state police spokesman said this database only documents the most serious offense stemming from the incident.
According to the data, during that one-year time frame, state police performed 814 criminal investigations in McKean County and made 752 criminal arrests. There were 244 drug investigations, 190 investigations of crimes against a person, 162 crimes against property, and 513 crimes against society.
Those crimes against society were broken down as follows: 325 drug offenses, 200 DUIs, 52 nuisance calls, 10 firearms/weapons, eight pornography/ prostitution calls, three Megan’s Law violations and 72 other crimes.
A state police spokesman explained the “other” category might include charges like animal cruelty, public drunkenness or disorderly conduct, where there isn’t a direct victim that could be identified.
Crimes against property included 11 cases of burglary, 51 of theft, 73 of fraud or forgery, four of arson and 35 others. In this instance, the spokesman said, the “other” category might include criminal mischief or unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Crimes against persons were one case of robbery, 26 sex offenses, 143 assault cases, 21 cases of trespass and six “other,” like stalking, reckless endangerment and domestic violence. This is also the section where cases of homicide or kidnapping would be counted; none were listed in the one-year time frame.
The database also broke down the number of crimes in each category by month. Criminal investigations, drug investigations and criminal arrests all peaked in February 2024. There were 84 criminal investigations that month, 89 criminal arrests and 38 drug investigations. The lowest number of each were in October 2023 — 52 criminal investigations, 42 criminal arrests and 14 drug investigations. There were 14 drug investigations in January 2024, too.
For incidents involving firearms, there were four listed, one robbery and three suicides.
