SMALL WORLD: We told readers a bit about former Bradfordian Marc Schuetrum, who lives in Germany now, in yesterday’s column.
Today we’ll tell you a bit more.
“We are all in the garden in my wife’s hometown (Waren an der Müritz) right now for a couple of weeks,” he told us on Wednesday. “Kids are doing swim courses in Lake Müritz.
“I thought I heard a father speaking American English to his son, so I later introduced myself. I used to live in Washington, N.J. (Warren County) and it turns out he is from Liberty Township which is 10 miles up the road from there.
“He and his family live here now through a church exchange. Nice folks. Had them over for a BBQ yesterday.”
Marc met his wife Andrea in New Jersey. “She was born and raised in East Germany under Communist rule,” he said. “She was 11 when the wall came down.”
She was working as an au pair in New Jersey when they met, and she declined his invitation for a date. They stayed in touch, even when she moved to Washington, D.C. with another family.
In 2001, they started dating, and he had a nice day planned in New York City — on Sept. 11, 2001. They were planning to visit Wall Street, Battery Park and Windows on the World at the top of the World Trade Center.
The weekend before the date, Marc was in an accident and broke his wrist and had to cancel their date. Luckily.
They married in 2005 in a stone church in Waren, and had a celebration in a castle on a lake.
The Schuetrums live in Hamburg, Germany.
