‘Round the Square: A special Easter trip, part 2 of 2

EASTER 2: And now the second part of Virginia Loveland’s account of the Bradford senior trip to Washington, D.C. We left off with a visit to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

“Immediately after this the Bradfordians started for the White House where the annual egg rolling was in progress. Before the largest crowd that ever witnessed this annual custom, the high school students took part in the games and generally enjoyed themselves. Some of the students wore costumes which added much to the merriment of the occasion. Mrs. Coolidge (First Lady Grace Coolidge) was the center of all attraction and was continually surrounded by large crowds. It was estimated tonight that 48,000 persons took part in the egg rolling and other Easter games.

“The Botanical Gardens and the Capitol were visited this afternoon. Special guides conducted the Bradford party through the Capitol and pointed out all the scenes of interest. After the visit to the Capitol, the party divided, some of the tourists heading for the scene of the congressional debates while others returned to the White House where a band concert by the Marine band was given.

“Theatre parties again occupied the attention of many of the party tonight, while others took a moonlight sail down the Potomac River.

“Through the courtesy of Congressman Swope, representative from Bradford’s district, the members of the senior party secured passes allowing them to enter the Capitol through the underground passage. Tonight several members of the party made arrangements to make an airplane flight over the city tomorrow.”

The Smithsonian Institute, Annapolis, airplane rides and then on to Atlantic City for the intrepid travelers. That was quite a trip!
