Otto stuns Cameron Co.; Port tops OV

DUKE CENTER — Earlier in an up-and-down season, the Otto-Eldred boys basketball team gave Cameron County a battle, falling 54-43.

That was actually one of the closer league victories of the year for the second-place Red Raiders.

In Monday’s rematch, the Terrors pulled off the upset.

Gavin Jimerson netted 13 points, Cole Sebastian collected 11 and O-E handed Cameron County just its second league loss of the winter in a 54-50 North Tier League overtime triumph. It was the biggest win of the season for coach Dan Dalton’s Terrors, who have won three of the last four, and critical to O-E’s playoff chances.

After leading by five (29-24) at halftime and trailing by one (36-35) through three quarters, the Terrors forced the extra session by tying it 44. In OT, Jimerson went 5-for-6 at the line and Sebastian connected on two of his field goals as O-E outscored Cameron County, 10-6.

“It was a great win against a really good team,” Dalton said.

Dino Brown tallied 18 points while Cadin Beldin had 13 for the Red Raiders (12-4, 9-2), who had previously only lost to Ridgway, first-place Coudersport and Bradford by three. The Terrors did a solid job on Jake Walters, holding the high-scoring big man to 11 points.

“He does some good things,” Dalton said of Walters. “With (Cameron) Grigsby as our primary guy on him, we really locked him down.”

O-E, which moved back to .500 at 8-8 and sits in sixth place in the NTL standings, returns to action today at Oswayo Valley.

Carter Steadman notched 16 points while Gunner Bean had 12 for the Green Wave. OV (2-15) gave Port A a much closer game after falling 88-34 in the teams’ first meeting, and actually had a 33-28 advantage at the break.

Port (6-11), however, outscored the Green Wave 24-9 in the third quarter to take control.

“We kind of had a new philosophy going in and guys came in with the right mindset,” OV coach Nick Goss said. “It came down to who hit the most shots in the fourth and Port did a good job of that and we lost steam at the end.”
