Each year the Veterans Memorial presents two $1,000 scholarships to students who studied at Port Allegany High School and the Seneca Highlands Career Technical Center in memory of Roxie Taylor, who was a vital member of the VFW Auxiliary for 12+ years. She was always willing to help and had an infectious smile. Recipients are Hannah Lathrop, left, and Zarek Price, second from right. With them are Roxy’s husband, Pete Taylor, and VMI Club Manager Melissa Smoker, who presented the awards. To qualify, applicants must be a resident of Port Allegany School District, must attend a post secondary trade school or college, have recorded volunteer hours from seventh through 12th grades and have a teacher recommendation. Lathrop has volunteered 527 hours for programs such as the Varsity Club, her church, Peer Helpers, PACS and Bruno Wrestling Camp. She is attending the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and is studying nursing. Price has volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America with over 1,000 hours of service. He is attending the Pennsylvania College of Technology and is studying architecture.
