VISITOR: Look at this handsome fella.
Fred Schneider tells us he got this photo of a cinnamon-colored bear with his trail camera in Elk County.
Speaking of local wildlife, Hal R. Harmon Sr. of Bradford had some insight into why Andy Heffner saw a spotted fawn this late in the season.
“The primary conception date for does is in mid-November but can happen in December or January at about 28-day intervals,” Hal writes.
“Deer have to be around 70 pounds to be adult enough to conceive. Fawns conceived late will be born and mature late, leading to births the next year, in June or July, instead of the normal mid to late May, hence small fawns in August.”
MEA CULPA:Sometimes we get it wrong. And in the case of a beautiful barn in Port Allegany that was pictured on page 2 of Wednesday’s paper, we sure did. We referred to the symbol as a hex sign, but that’s not the case.
The barn’s owner called to tell us it is a quilt piece, painted by a quilt guild and colored in by her, in memorial to her husband.
A barn quilt is a quilted pattern painted onto plywood and attached to the side of a barn, garage, store or a building. While the name is barn quilt, it is usually a single quilt block.
What a beautiful tribute.
FESTIVALS: Everyone in downtown Bradford has been watching the community set up this week for the annual Festa Italiana, which kicks off today through Saturday.
And it’s not the only festival going on this week.
The Cameron and Elk county fairs are both going on right now, with both set to last through Saturday. The Mount Jewett Swedish Fest will begin Friday and last through Sunday.
The Swedish Fest will end just in time for the start of the McKean County Fair on Monday.
Whew. We’re tired just thinking about it.
