EMPORIUM — The Cameron County Recycling Center will now accept additional materials after partnering with a neighboring county to expand services for residents.
County Recycling Coordinator Tara Newton attended Thursday’s Cameron County Commissioners meeting to announce that by working with the Elk County recycling facility, a wider variety of items can now be accepted.
Drop off is available to all Cameron County residents at the recycling center located in Plank Road Hollow. More paper products, including glossy magazines and newspaper inserts, are acceptable for drop off.
Newton stated that the move expands recycling opportunities for residents and saves money. Many materials can now be transported to the Elk County facility that were previously driven to Brockway and points beyond. Some items, such as glass, are still taken to Port Allegany.
Items that can be dropped off are listed as: Clear, green and brown glass; numbers 1 and 2 plastics; bi-metal cans; aluminum cans; corrugated cardboard (must be flat); paper board; newspapers with inserts; magazines and catalogs; office paper; and junk mail.
Organizers ask that all glass, plastic and cans be emptied and rinsed prior to drop off. Place bagged recycling inside the gate when it is unlocked.
Electronics recycling is also available to Cameron County residents at the Elk County Recycling Center, located on Washington Street, on the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
In other business, county officials are currently working on a draft of the 2018 budget, which will be on display in the commissioners’ office as of Tuesday for public review. Formal adoption is expected at the Dec. 21 board meeting following the mandatory review period.
Chief Clerk Brenda Munz reported that this year’s general election went smoothly. Official results were reported earlier this week and are available on the county website. Munz stated that there will be no official recount on the judge seats. Commissioners commended Munz and assistant clerk Mindy Lupro on a job well done.
Approval was given for a revision request on the 2015 Community Development Block Grant program. Funds were moved from a project at the Northern Tier Community Action Corporation (NTCAC) building to be used on the Emporium Senior Center’s project to install a new kitchen.
Approval was given for an Act 13 funding request received from the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department in the amount of $7,044 for replacement of a generator at the fire hall.
Another Act 13 funding request in the amount of $700 was approved, for purchase of five M5 radios through for public safety/emergency preparedness.
The next meeting of the Cameron County Commissioners will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 at the courthouse in Emporium.
