Academy Awards Film Series slated to begin Feb. 27 at theater

Area residents can start getting excited for quality films, as the 2017 Academy Awards Film Series begins Feb. 27 at the Bradford Main Street Movie House.

Each movie will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and the series will run through May 15. The movies can be paid for as patrons arrive on a weekly basis, or a season pass is available for purchase to cover the entire series.

The first movie to be shown in this film series will be “Captain Fantastic” starring Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay and Samantha Isler. The movie is set in the Pacific Northwest, where a father is raising six children based on rigorous physical and intellectual efforts. However, the family must move and re-enter society, facing a new lifestyle and changes in the father’s perception of parenting.

The series will continue on March 6 with “Manchester by the Sea” starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler. The movie follows an uncle who is thrust into parenting a teenage nephew following the unexpected death of the boy’s father.

On March 13, the movie “Fences” starring Denzel Washington, Viola Davis and Stephen Henderson will take over the screen. The movie tells the story of an African-American father in the 1950’s, attempting to raise his family and deal with important events in U.S. history along the way.

On March 20, the movie shown will be “La La Land” starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Rosemarie DeWitt. The movie tells the story of a romance between two souls, drawn together by common interests. The love story turns sour, however, when success and the related decisions come between them.

On March 27, the movie “Loving” starring Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton and Will Dalton tells the story of an inter-racial couple who get married in Virginia and are faced with consequences that include a legal battle that reaches the U.S. Supreme Court.

Moonlight starring Mahershala Ali, Shariff Earp and Duan Sanderson will be shown on April 3. This movie is about the life of a young black man, sharing his growth to adulthood and a struggle to find himself in the rough neighborhood in Miami where he is growing up.

On April 10, the movie “Jackie” will be shown. The movie stars Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard and Greta Gerwig. It tells the story of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination of President John. F. Kennedy.

The movie, “Lion” will be shown on April 17. This movie stars Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara. It tells the story of a five-year-old Indian boy, lost in the streets of Calcutta and forced to survive on his own until he is adopted by an Australian couple. It also tells his story two decades later as he sets out to find the family he lost.

On April 24, the movie “Arrival” will tell the story of a linguistics professor who is set to the task of interpreting the language of aliens inside 12 spaceships that appear in the sky. This movie stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

On May 1, the film “20th Century Women” starring Annette Benning, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig will be shown. This movie explores Southern California in the 1970’s and shares the stories of three women as they pursue love and freedom during that time period.

Meanwhile, May 8 will be the day to see “Silence” starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson. The movie tells the story of Jesuit Priests in the 17th century, as they travel to Japan to meet their mentor and share Catholicism, facing violence and persecution during their journey.

The film series ends with Nocturnal Animals” on May 15. This movie stars Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon, portraying an art gallery owner who is haunted by her late husband’s novel, a work that she feels is a threat to her and also a symbolic tale of revenge.

For $84, a season pass is available. This includes admission for each of the 12 films in this year’s line-up and also a medium popcorn to enjoy at each showing. Those preferring to pay per movie, there is a cost of $7 per show.
