THOSE LIGHTS: We told you yesterday of one possibility for the
“strange lights” observed over the skies in McKean County in the
middle of December.

More today.

Joe Hepfner of Port Allegany writes, “In response to the tidbit
regarding the strange lights in the skies above Eldred: Two of my
children saw strange lights as well. They had rushed home from the
Port Allegany High School that evening, obviously excited, saying
they had ‘seen two UFOs.’ “

“They explained that they had seen two objects in the sky over
the High School and one had appeared to be following the other. It
looked as if the objects were shooting out glowing red balls. At
first the balls were few, but as time passed they increased in
number.

“My daughter took out her cell phone and snapped a picture of
each object, thinking we wouldn’t believe them. Eventually the
objects continued their flight and disappeared behind a mountain.
Then they rushed home and showed us the pics. The pics on my
daughter’s camera phone recorded the date as Dec. 12.”

That jibes with all our information. And, until we have better
information, we’ll go along with the theory that a rocket booster
from a spy satellite broke up in the sky and was seen in New
Hampshire, eastern Maine, Nova Scotia – and McKean County.

We reported yesterday that a Maine resident read in her
newspaper that a “security satellite” had been launched from
Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., and proceeded north.
An official said: “We did have a launch and it did go north, so
there is a possibility of a booster (rocket) or something coming
down in that general area.

Meanwhile, we heard a totally different theory from Don Parrish
of Beaver Falls, former waterways conservation officer,
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, McKean County: “I believe
the strange lights seen in the night sky on Dec. 12 were the aurora
borealis (northern lights).”

More later.

TUNE IN: Our very own Sandy Rhodes will be “appearing” tomorrow
on the local public radio about the stories which make the “top 10”
list in the Bradford area. NPR is at 100.9 in “the Bradford bowl”
and 90.1 in the surrounding area. The taped show will air at 7:33
and 8:33 a.m. and be posted on its website after 10 a.m.
