THAT PHOTO: “To tell all the people who wrote letters into the
paper about the deer on the front page was very offensive to us
hunters. I’m sure that all the hunters that saw that had kids, and
they got excited about knowing there is still deer around. Come on,
people – it was white-tailed deer, not Santa’s reindeer!”
More feedback today on that picture.
Samantha Holsinger of Bradford continues, “I am a 15-year-old
girl, resident of Bradford. I have been going hunting with my dad
since I was 8 or 9 years old. When I turned 12, I got my license
just like all the other kids. When I was 13, I shot my first deer!
The feeling of getting my first deer was amazing and exciting. Some
of you folks should try it some time.”
“Hanging deer from the DeSoto balcony has been happening for
years. Where else are the out-of-town hunters going to hang their
deer? I understand your points of how you’re disgusted, but if you
are, just don’t look at the papers around deer season! Duh, it’s
never going to stop!
“By the way, deer season starts usually on the last Monday of
November. That’s all I have to say, but you’re welcome!”
Brad Binder of Port Allegany writes, “I was not offended by you
picture of the deer. However, I find pictures of Hillary Clinton
and Ed Rendell extremely offensive. Please refrain from publishing
them on your front page.”
Susan Edmonds, a former Bradfordian living in Erie, writes,
“Although I didn’t have the pleasure (thank goodness!) of seeing
the photograph of the hanging, gutted deer that seems to have
garnished a lot of attention in the Era, I did want to share that
The Erie Times-News went another route and featured a picture of
two cute, unsuspecting deer nuzzling each other, along with an
accompanying story about the first day of hunting season being
imminent. That photograph probably haunted me just as much as the
one featured in your publication would have. Dead or alive, you
know the outcome would be the same! Just wanted to put a different
perspective on things.”
