Penn State has picked up secondary help via the transfer portal.
Audavion Collins, a cornerback from Mississippi State, verbally committed to Penn State on Tuesday afternoon. He announced his commitment via social media.
Collins’ decision comes a day after he was on-campus to visit. He will have four years of eligibility left and is expected to enroll soon with preseason camp starting in August.
Collins is Penn State’s fifth portal addition of the offseason, joining Kent State wideout Dante Cephas, Florida State receiver Malik McClain, Minnesota tailback Trey Potts and Old Dominion defensive tackle Alonzo Ford.
Collins picked Penn State over offers from Akron and Western Kentucky. He entered the portal in April, and the Nittany Lions offered earlier this month.
Collins didn’t see any game action as a true freshman at Mississippi State, where he signed as a three-star prospect in the 2022 cycle. During his high school recruitment, Collins also had offers from Tennessee, Michigan State, Indiana and UCF.
Penn State is hoping Collins can add depth after Storm Duck’s exit. Duck, who transferred from North Carolina in January, was set to play a big role. But after it became obvious Duck was the third-choice cornerback behind Kalen King and Johnny Dixon, he decided last month to spend his final year of eligibility at Louisville.
Collins doesn’t need to make an instant impact. King and Dixon are experienced playmakers, the former already being hailed as a possible 2024 first-round talent. Cam Miller has shown flashes of promise while early enrollee freshmen Elliot Washington, Lamont Payne and Zion Tracy offer potential.
But it was clear James Franklin and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith wanted someone to help replace Duck. They also offered two other portal corners: East Central’s Donovan Callis and Louisiana’s Trey Amos, who has since picked Alabama.
