Given the political overtones of “The Trumponomics Bill,” perhaps a brief rebuttal would be acceptable and in order.
Initially, I can agree on one point of the op-ed by Chris Stanley, the St. Bonaventure University professor, that being the out-of-control national debt. It might be mentioned, however, that in addition to the tax cut there was also a major requirement to rebuild our military, which was severely ignored in the eight years of the Obama administration.
Sad to say, but with the chaos in the world today, a strong military is more than important, it is imperitive. Perhaps former President Obama should have spent more time off the golf course.
Secondly, the writer notes that monthly job growth under Obama was higher than it has been under President Trump. Obviously, when you are starting with unemployment at record levels, it is quite easy to show major improvement, but a lot more difficult to start at 6-7% and take it down to 3-4%.
Basically, the economy is still doing rather well and I suspect it could continue if there were fewer pessimists and more optimists.
Lastly, if anyone thinks that we would be better off with some of the giveaway programs advocated by many of the Democratic presidential candidates, and are still concerned about the national debt, their thinking is clouded. Free health care, free college, no more fossil fuels, etc., etc. As we are often reminded, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.”
Perhaps if our wonderful Congress would work with the president some good things could still happen. We are not at war and most folks have jobs. Thank you, Mr. President.
Merry Christmas.
