District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reported Wednesday that no charges will be filed against the driver of a truck involved in a mid-September accident that killed a pedestrian from out of state.
“The city has found no criminal wrongdoing of the driver,” Shaffer’s statement read. “Police cite the setting sun as a factor in the crash.”
At approximately 6:50 p.m. Sept. 14, Bradford City Police Chief Michael Ward and EMS were called to the Forman Street bridge in front of Arby’s for a pedestrian who had been struck by a motor vehicle.
Jesse Meredith, 84, who was staying at the Holiday Inn Express, was pronounced dead at the scene. McKean County Coroner Mike Cahill’s office was called to the scene. The cause of Meredith’s death was reported as blunt force trauma.
At the time of the incident, Ward did not identify the driver of the vehicle, but said the adult male driver remained on the scene and was cooperative with the investigation. The vehicle had just exited U.S. Route 219 prior to the accident happening.
At that time of evening, motorists contend with the setting sun while traveling west.
Ward said, “We are looking at all factors, including environmental.”
Shaffer’s release Wednesday stated that Ward and Officer Shaun McDonald had concluded their investigation. The information from the day of the incident did not change in her statement, and she noted that the collision occurred in the lane of travel.
Members of the City of Bradford Police, City of Bradford Fire Department, Pennsylvania State Police and its Collision and Accident Reconstruction Unit, district attorney, county detective and agents with the Attorney General’s Office (who were in the area working with local law enforcement) all responded to the scene.
