A Kane woman is in Clearfield County Jail without bail, charged in the overdose death of a DuBois-area man.
Samantha Gustafson, 30, is charged with drug delivery resulting in death, a first-degree felony; possession with intent to deliver, a felony; criminal use of a communication facility, a third-degree felony; and involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The charges, filed by Sandy Township Police, are from April 18, when Matthew Meholic, 33, overdosed on fentanyl-laced heroin and died at a residence at Treasure Lake after having bought drugs from “Sammy G.,” later identified as Gustafson, according to the criminal complaint.
A forensic analysis of his phone showed Meholic had met up with Gustafson on April 17. With approval from the state attorney general’s office and the family, police assumed the identity of Meholic on his cell phone to attempt to get Gustafson to come back to Sandy Township, where she could be detained and questioned.
Acting as Meholic, the officers said they had $200 for drugs if she could come get it. She agreed to pick up the money, and then drive to New York to get the drugs and deliver them back to him, the complaint stated. When she arrived at Treasure Lake, her vehicle was surrounded by police and agents with the attorney general’s office, the complaint stated.
When interviewed by police, Gustafson admitted to meeting with Meholic on April 17 and selling him $140 worth of heroin, the complaint stated.
Gustafson was arraigned Thursday before District Judge David Meholick and denied bail.
From this same incident, she had been charged in May with conspiracy to deliver and attempted delivery of drugs, both of which were waived to the Court of Common Pleas.
On Friday, Clearfield County District Attorney Ryan Sayers explained the cases will be combined.
“They will be consolidated after the preliminary hearing in the new case,” Sayers said. “They will be separate cases for the time being. There will likely be a Commonwealth motion to consolidate filed.”
