KANE — A Coudersport man has been arrested on allegations he broke into a home and took collector coins and money collected for Girl Scout cookies.
Anthony John Duell, 29, of 1416 Dividing Ridge Road, was arraigned Friday before Magisterial District Judge David Engman on charges of burglary, a first-degree felony; criminal trespassing, a second-degree felony; and theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, both third-degree felonies; court records stated.
According to court records, overnight between Feb. 21 and 22, Duell broke into a home at 204 Chestnut St., Port Allegany, by using a tool to pry open a door.
He is alleged to have taken collector coins from a China closet and three SentrySafes from a storage room that contained several thousand dollars worth of collector coins, silver certificate coins and mint coins, along with more than $300 that was collected for Girl Scout cookie sales, according to court records.
Court records said the resident, Amber Lloyd, told police Duell had come to the house on Feb. 21 to work on frozen water lines, and he asked if she still had the coins. She further stated Duell had been previously suspected of taking coins, but her then-living father did not find proof and the alleged incident was not reported to police.
Court records indicated that Port Allegany Borough Police had Lloyd call Duell and tell him she knew what he did and say she wanted him to return her belongings; at 2 p.m. Feb. 22, Duell brought back a dish and a Ziplock bag with coins, a few coin sets and a cloth bag with coins and cash
However, Duell did not bring any of the safes, and Lloyd believed there are still thousands of dollars worth of coins still missing, court records stated.
Duell was committed to McKean County Jail in Smethport in lieu of $25,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
