HARRISBURG (TNS) — A fake account on Facebook is presenting itself as the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency in an attempt to get personal information.
The fraudulent page is sharing information about housing choice voucher programs being open, but the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency does not administer housing choice vouchers. The fake page is also sponsoring their posts, paying for the scam to be pushed to the public.
A fake document is also circulating saying there’s a waiting list for the bogus vouchers and asking people to sign up.
People should not provide their personal information through links or contacts listed on the fake page or the documents. All official links from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency begin with www.PHFA.org. If anything seems off, call the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency at (855) 827-3466.
Chris Anderson, communications officer at the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, first noticed the Facebook page on Tuesday. More than 50 people asked the agency about it, he said. Anderson and multiple other people have reported the posts and the page, but it hasn’t been taken down by Facebook yet.
Anderson blocked the fake page from sharing legitimate Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency posts, but can’t do much more. He said multiple other states have experienced the same scam.
Fraud alerts from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency can be found at www.PHFA.org and in the agency’s monthly newsletter.
