‘Round the Square: Yikes.
SNAKE: Twenty-three feet, 8 inches. That’s roughly the size of a two-story building.
“Guinness World Records confirmed a massive reticulated python discovered in the Maros region of Indonesia is officially the longest wild snake to be formally measured.
“The record-keeping organization said it reviewed evidence confirming the female snake measures 23 feet and 8 inches in length,” read a news story Feb. 5 from UPI News Service.
Yikes.
That’s nearly the width of a road.
Conservationist Budi Purwanto, licensed snake handler Diaz Nugraha and natural history photographer Radu Frentiu currently have the python. They had gone out searching for it — on purpose — after hearing stories about sightings.
They’ve named it “The Baronness.” She weighed 213 pounds, and didn’t appear to have eaten recently.
Reticulated pythons typically grow to an adult length ranging from 9 feet, 10 inches to 19 feet, 2 inches, the story noted.
One python shot in Indonesia in 1912 was alleged to have been 32’9″ in length.
Guinness World Records said, “The longest reticulated python in captivity ever recorded by GWR was Medusa, who stretched 25 feet, 2 inches as confirmed in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, on 12 October 2011. She was owned by Full Moon Productions.” She weighed 350 pounds, and was used in a haunted house experience.
Female green anacondas are known as the heaviest snakes. From South and Central America, anacondas can average 9 feet 10 inches to 16 feet 4 inches long and typically weigh between 65 and 155 pounds, according to GWR. “But extra-large individuals after a substantial meal or during pregnancy might tip the scales at up to 660 pounds.”
The longest species of venomous snake, meanwhile, which kills its victims by dispensing toxic venom via its fangs, is the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), native to India and south-east Asia. Adults average 12 feet, 1 inch to 13 feet, 1 inch in length and weigh about 15 pounds.
