January’s potent one-two punch of bone-chilling temperatures and snow reminds us how important it is that Pennsylvanians have access to dependable utility service to economically heat their homes on the coldest days of the year.
Most of us take for granted the reliable service utilities provide but, unfortunately, there are vulnerable consumers struggling to pay their utility bills.
Fortunately, utility companies offer energy assistance programs to ensure consumers never need to worry about paying their bills or maintaining their utility services. Companies like Columbia Gas help consumers understand their eligibility, work through options to match their needs, and apply for assistance to get back on track.
For example, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded program administered through Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services, has helped low-income Pennsylvania households for more than 40 years with one-time grants to pay winter heating bills.
LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants. Cash grants range from $200 to $1,000, based on household size, income and fuel type.
Crisis grants help eligible households facing emergency situations and in jeopardy of losing heat. Households can receive more than one crisis grant, as necessary, during the season until the maximum benefit of $1,000 is reached.
This season, over $160 million is available through Pennsylvania’s LIHEAP program, and the state estimates that over 331,000 households could potentially receive aid. However, many eligible consumers don’t apply for LIHEAP and miss out on its valuable benefits.
Individuals can apply online at www.compass.state.pa.us or request an application by calling the statewide LIHEAP hotline at (866) 857-7095. LIHEAP runs through April 4.
Income guidelines change each season, so some households may now be eligible for assistance and not even realize it. Check your income eligibility and apply.
