AUSTIN — Spend the dog days of summer outdoors at Sinnemahoning State Park as several free, public programs have been scheduled for August.
Native and Invasive Plant Walk is set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Join the park’s intern for a walk on the Lowlands Trail to learn about common native and invasive plant species found at the park. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
Learn more about the butterflies of First Fork Valley, including upclose investigations of any caught with park nets, during Investigating Butterflies set 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Meet at the Wildlife Center Classroom.
Hourlong pontoon tours of Stevenson Reservoir are scheduled each Sunday in August. Group size is limited. To reserve a seat, pre-register. Pre-registration is not required but is strongly recommended. There is no fee for regular Sunday interpretive pontoon boat tours, but donations are requested. Tour times are 9 to 10:15 a.m., 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., and 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Meet at the lake day use area.
Ride the Rail Trail 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 10 for a guided ride on the Lowlands Trail. Bring your bike or check out one of the park’s loaners. Registration is required for those who plan to borrow a bike. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
Bring the family to the Wildlife Center at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 for Story & Stroll. A reading of “The Clumsy Beetle” by Eric Carle will be followed by an outdoor exploration in search of insects. Wraps up around 2:45 p.m.
The movie “The Secret World of Bats” will be shown 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10, following a short talk about Pennsylvania’s bats by the park educator. Meet at the Wildlife Center Classroom.
Join a park educator 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 17 for a nature walk on the Lowlands Trail, investigating plants and animals found along the way. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
Dragonflies are expert flyers that are notoriously hard to catch and investigate. Learn tips and tricks for catching these fast flyers and investigate their many shapes and colors up close during To Catch a Dragonfly scheduled 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the campground.
Join a park naturalist to learn about the park’s beavers and stay for a showing of the PBS Nature special “Leave it to Beavers” slated 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Campground Amphitheater.
Take a kayak nature tour 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24. Borrow equipment or bring your own. Open to anyone age 10 and older. Group size is limited and pre-registration is required. Meet at the lake day use area.
Learn about monarch butterflies’ long migration to Mexico during a showing of “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies” at the Campground Amphitheater 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30.
Then, from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 31, a presentation about monarch butterflies will be followed by a short walk to catch, tag and release some. Nets provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk through fields. Open to all ages. Meet at the Wildlife Center Classroom.
