Are we witnessing, and participating in, the real-time death of our democracy with eyes wide shut?
Most of the democracies that have died since the end of the cold war have been overthrown by elected officials rather than coups. The United States is experiencing the underming of confidence in our electoral and judicial systems by elected government officials. Public confidence is the political norm that protects our system.
These destroyers have no demonstrable evidence but that does not matter. With the aid of some cooperating press, oligarchy, and a populace asleep at the wheel, are we are moving in the direction of elected autocracy?
