IT TAKES A VILLAGE: In 2003 the headquarters building of the United Nations in Iraq was bombed. As a result of the bombing, 22 humanitarian workers lost their lives.
In 2009, the UN announced that this date would be recognized as World Humanitarian Day.
On this day, the work of humanitarians around the world is celebrated. For more information or to join in the celebration, go to www.worldhumanitarianday.org/ or www.usaid.gov/world-humanitarian-day
But, what is a humanitarian and why do they say it takes a village?
A humanitarian is a person who cares about others and sets out to use their skills, knowledge, or assets to help in any way possible. They often participate in charity and other work that sets others up for a better way of life.
A village of humanitarians means that every part of society is needed to tackle the issue. The world is not made up of places as great as the United States, unfortunately. In some places, war and natural disasters have left many homeless and in need of humanitarian aid.
Donations of all kinds are one way to help. Another way is to volunteer to pack donations for shipment. Yet another is to go on a mission trip or other excursion where volunteers are needed onsite. It is amazing to see and experience how others are surviving in this world by stepping out of your comfort zone.
Even in our own country, there is a humanitarian need in many cities. All efforts, no matter how small, are appreciated. What can you do to be part of the village?
