A Texas man has been arrested in a 34-year-old murder case in which the accused allegedly beat and stabbed his grandmother to death.
WJET/WFXP reported that 55-year-old Jeremy Brock was arrested in Austin, Texas, Monday for the murder of his grandmother, Helen Vogt.
The crime took place on July 23, 1988. According to police reports, blood was found throughout a condo where the 77-year-old Vogt was found beaten and stabbed numerous times. A neighbor had discovered her body.
“I got upstairs, and I looked over the kitchen sink and there was blood all over the kitchen sink, all over everywhere. I ran around and went upstairs and as I went upstairs I found her laying on the floor,” the neighbor said to WJET/WFXP in 1988.
“Mrs. Vogt was stabbed so many times. I handled 32 homicides when I was with city police and you very seldom see a victim that is stabbed that many times, 50 to 51,” said Dominick DiPaolo, former Erie District Judge.
According to the Eric County District Attorney’s Office, it was updated technology that examined forensic evidence that led to authorities arresting Brock. They later called former detectives involved in the case to tell them about the arrest.
“It was a passion for them, and they really, never forgot about Helen,” Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said. “So it was very important to them and just a thrill for me to be able to do that, and I was very grateful to all of them for all of their work, as well as letting some of the family members and loved ones know as well.”
Due to their success in this case, Erie Police Chief Dan Spizarny said the department will not cease to investigate past and present murders.
“The community depends on us to bring justice to people,” he said. “Unfortunately, there’s not a single member on the department that was here in 1988 when this occurred, but it brings pride to the department that we’re not going to let these cases go.”
