QUESTIONS: We were intrigued by a comment from a political candidate about teaching high school students civics again. We wondered how we would do on the civics questions for the naturalization test.

This was an interesting exercise, because in the past few years, the internet and social media have promulgated so much misinformation that it was nice to have a refresher.

We’re going to give you the questions first, and the answers at the end.

What is the supreme law of the land?

How many amendments does the Constitution have?

What is freedom of religion?

What is the “rule of law”?

Who makes federal laws?

The U.S. House of Representatives has how many voting members?

What does the President’s Cabinet do?

If both the President and Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes President?

And the answers:

The supreme law of the land is the U.S. Constitution.

The Constitution has 27 amendments.

Freedom of religion is the freedom to practice any religion, or not practice a religion.

The rule of law is that everyone must follow the law, leaders must obey the law, government must obey the law and no one is above the law. (We think this one needs stressed a bit more.)

Federal laws are made by the U.S. legislature.

There are 435 voting members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Cabinet advises the president.

If both the President and Vice President can no longer serve, the Speaker of the House becomes President.

There are sections on history, geography, rights and responsibilities and subsections, too. Look it up. It’s important information.
