DIABETES ALERT! Today is American Diabetes Association Alert Day, a day set aside each year in America to create awareness about Diabetes, known as the ‘silent killer.’ Diabetes gained the moniker of ‘silent killer’ because the human body sometimes shows no symptoms despite blood sugar levels gradually increasing until a person is at fatal risk.
The day is observed every fourth Tuesday of March in hopes that the more than 34.2 million Americans that are at risk of developing Diabetes take notice. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) created Alert Day back in 1986 as part of its campaign of preventative measures and attempt to educate the masses about all types of Diabetes.
A survey conducted by ADA revealed that around 68% of Americans did not know that diabetes is closely related to heart diseases, and that stroke is a serious threat to human life. If that isn’t bad enough, it went on to reveal that about 25% of the diabetic population do not even know they have the disease.
Diabetes currently ranks as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, not to mention the multitude of other serious health complications which Diabetes is the primary causative agent behind. Also, diabetic patients are only increasing with time. According to the ADA, more than 10.5% of the U.S. population is diabetic.
