FALL FOLIAGE: PA Wilds has shared 10 locations that are worth the trip if you enjoy seeing the fall foliage in full color. Compiled by The Happy Traveler, the list includes locations divided into zones, so you can pick out a few and plan trips accordingly, visiting at just the right time.
When it comes to Fall Foliage, the Northern Zone peaks in early October, the Central Zone peaks in mid-October and the Southern Zone peaks in late October.
In Zone 1, Pine Creek Gorge is almost 50 miles long and 1,000 feet deep. A visit to Leonard Harrison or Colton Point State Park will provide some of the best fall views of the canyon, where deep reds, yellows and purples show up in early October. The historic Pine Creek Rail Trail is a gem of the Pine Creek Gorge and offers a tremendous way to view fall foliage.
The Allegheny National Forest is also in Zone 1. The recommendation for the best views locally is to take to the trails or opt for an “open cockpit bi-plane tour in a beautifully restored, vintage 1943 Boeing Stearman or float along the Allegheny River by boat, kayak or canoe and sightsee along 27 miles of water trails.”
In Zone 2, Presque Isle State Park is located in Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes Region and provides visitors a colorful autumn display with a water backdrop.
The 3,200-acre peninsula curls into the lake, “offering a wide variety of fall experiences. Home to more than 4 million visitors each year, Presque Isle offers the leisurely 14-mile Karl Boyes Multi-purpose National Recreation Trail for walkers interested in leaf sightseeing along the Bay. There also are 11 miles of hiking trails throughout the park for those who want a more up-close view of the fall colors,” according to PAWilds.com.
