Every year at this time the Zonta Club of Bradford recognizes area women and men who stand out as supporters of women’s rights.
In 1977 the United Nations established International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8. It is a day to celebrate worldwide the contributions people have made to women’s rights. Locally, the Rose Day honorees are chosen because they have shared their time or talents in a way that contributes to the health and growth of the community. The contributions may be entrepreneurial, educational, artistic, inspirational, or charitable. The club also recognizes like-minded men who support the work of gender equality.
Yellow roses and a note of thanks were delivered this year to Carolyn Boser Newhouse, executive director/consultant at Bradford Area Alliance; Katie Boser, professional photographer; Janelle Nolan, Bradford Area Public Library, adult programming and marketing director; Molly Lindahl, Bradford Landmark Society, genealogy, special projects; Ruth Bogdan, Bradford Era, staff reporter; Tonia Hartzell, family advocate, Children’s Advocacy Center; Marty Cummins, business owner, Cummins Country Charm and Bradford Area School District pre-K teacher; Bri Payne, social media strategist, Zippo Manufacturing, RISE; Vanessa Castano, executive director, YWCA; Dr. K James Evans, vice president and dean emeritus, University Of Pittsburgh at Bradford; and Diane Smith, conductor, Twin Tiers Community Band.
