Bradford man pleads guilty in two assaults, including one with hatchet

SMETHPORT — A Bradford man accused in two separate assaults — including one that involved hitting someone in the head with a hatchet — pleaded guilty Thursday in McKean County Court.

Paul M. Travis III, 32, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to charges in two cases: a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one case and a charge of simple assault in the second.

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer explained that on Dec. 5, 2019, Travis threw a female to the ground, causing a back injury to her, as well as soreness and injury to her neck, wrist and leg.

Then, on April 8, in Bradford City, Travis hit a male in the head numerous times with a hatchet, causing lacerations to the male’s head, neck, back and torso, Shaffer said. The victim required medical treatment including two staples to his head.

Travis will be sentenced Nov. 24.

He is incarcerated in McKean County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
