ALLEGANY, N.Y. — Two Smethport residents have been issued appearance tickets following an incident at Home Depot in Allegany June 10.
According to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, Darell Goodwill, 81, and Lynn Goodwill, 74, both of Route 6, Smethport, have been charged with Confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle: Extreme Temps.
Cattaraugus County Sheriff Deputies assisted Allegany Police at the Home Depot parking lot at 1:58 p.m. June 6, when witnesses reported finding a dog locked inside a red pickup truck, which was not running and had all windows closed. Outside temperatures were above 90 degrees, and the witnesses had attempted to find the dog’s owners with no luck. Police observed the dog to be in distress, according to reports, and unlocked the vehicle and removed the Cocker Spaniel. Water and shade were provided by a bystander.
Police reports indicate the Goodwills returned to the vehicle roughly 20 minutes later. Police say a short investigation was conducted and charges of animal neglect were filed at the Olean Sub-station shortly afterward. The dog was taken into custody by the Town of Allegany Dog Control Officer and is in the care of the officer until further notice.
