Teams from nine different school districts competed in three divisions: elementary, middle and high school, during the Intermediate Unit 9 Spring Reading Competition, held Thursday at Fretz Middle School.
Teams of up to 12 students worked on reading from a list of books and then answered questions in the competition. The winning results are as follows:
High school: Port Allegany came in first place with 46 points, St. Marys came in second place with 24 points and Coudersport came in third place with 32 points.
At the middle school level, Randolph, N.Y., came in first place with 51 points, Fretz Middle School’s team “Book 4: Page Turners” came in second place with 48 points and Kane came in third place with 38 points.
At the elementary school level, Kane came in first place with 57 points, Smethport came in second place with 51 points and School Street Elementary’s “Super Magnus Chungus Legentibus” team came in third place with 47 points.
Reading competitions are held each fall and spring. Schools who are interested in fielding a team should contact librarians Aimee Emerson at Fretz Middle School or Missy Cornelius at School Street Elementary for more information.
Teams who participated in the competition represented Coudersport, Kane, Port Allegany, Fillmore, Smethport, Bradford’s School Street Elementary, Fretz and BAHS; Oswayo Valley, Randolph and St. Marys.
