Republican legislators have lauded President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday, while Democratic legislators were critical.
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., has been a longtime critic of Trump’s. His response to the State of the Union address continued in the same vein.
“For three years, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have pursued a corporate agenda that gives obscene tax cuts to the super-rich, rips health care away from millions and shortchanges our children,” said Casey. “I heard nothing in last night’s speech that leads me to believe the year ahead will be any different.”
On the other side of the political aisle, Congressman Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., spoke of Trump delivering on promises and having a bold vision for the future.
“President Trump’s vision for America is bold, future-focused, and packed with common sense solutions to our greatest challenges,” Thompson said. “Since taking office, the president has been delivering on historic trade deals, combatting the national opioid epidemic, securing our southern border, and rebuilding our national defense.”
Economically, the nation is seeking a resurgence with Trump, he continued.
“Pennsylvania is experiencing the great American comeback. New business applications are up 21 percent, manufacturing wages have seen increases, new investments are flowing into opportunity zones, and 162,000 new jobs have been created since the president took office,” Thompson said. “I look forward to continuing to work with the Trump Administration to deliver results for Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District.”
U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey mentioned the resurgence as well.
“President Trump’s State of the Union address highlighted the great strides our nation has made over the past three years and set an optimistic and ambitious agenda for the future,” the Republican senator said.
“The economy is the best it has been in my adult life. President Trump deserves a lot of credit for advancing pro-growth policies that have led to near record low unemployment, bigger paychecks for blue-collar workers, and U.S. companies bringing $1 trillion back from overseas,” he said.
Toomey was encouraged that Trump mentioned sanctuary cities as well.
“For five years, I have fought to end dangerous sanctuary city policies,” he said. “I appreciate that President Trump continues to make our work to accomplish this a priority. Congress should pass my Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities legislation to help put an end to sanctuary city policies once and for all.”
He commended Trump for making America a safer place.
“Finally, President Trump has inarguably made our country safer,” Toomey said. “The administration deserves praise for taking out two of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and holding Iran to account for its hostile actions.”
