The O’Briens are known for their “enchanted garden” during the warmer months, complete with gazebo, lanterns, strings of lights and and a multitude of perennials, though their love of all things Christmas shines brightly during the holiday season.
Longtime Bradford residents Dan and Sandy O’Brien have lived in their current Forman Street residence, which dates back to 1880, for 60 years. They’ve raised 4 children and have 9 grandchildren ranging from ages 20 to 31, which was apparent on the festive wooden Santa plaque displayed on the wall by the front door, featuring all the grandchildren’s names on little wooden stockings.
While the children are all grown up now, they are all in nearby towns and visit often, with one son still residing in Bradford. In fact, some of them helped decorate the inside of the house this holiday season.
“We have lights all across the front and on all the bushes. I’ve been decorating for a number of years,” said Dan O’Brien.
There are decorated trees on the porch, sled and ice skate decorations and lights galore, extending into the garden space behind the house.
“We call him Clark Griswald because he puts all those lights up,” Sandy O’Brien said with a chuckle.
Her husband said the Christmas decorating started off smaller, then “expanded as the years went on.”
He attributes it to “holiday spirit.”
The spirit continues inside the home, too, with the couple going all out to adorn the living space. Sandy O’Brien’s favorite is her collection of 30 or so Santas.
“I just love them,” she said.
Around the beautifully decorated house, one can see her love for ‘Ol Saint Nick, with Santa figures lining the staircase and a brightly lit tree dedicated to Santa himself.
The lights out in front of the home are saved each year to use for backup in case any of the lights go out in the garden during the summer, when lights are no longer available at local stores. The garden has been showcased in garden tours and even won “Best in Show” during Bradford’s Garden Tour and Gala in 2018.
