SMETHPORT — Down two with 11 seconds to go in double overtime, Smethport head coach Chad Goodman opted to go for three and the win by putting the ball into the hands of senior guard MyKayla Deyarmin.
Goodman drew up a play that had Deyarmin come off of a screen for an open look, and the play worked to perfection as the guard drilled a trey with just 2.6 seconds to go to send Smethport to a heart-stopping 33-32 win over Northern Potter in double OT.
With the win, Smethport improves to 4-3 overall and to an impressive 3-1 mark in the NTL.
“This was a big win for our girls,” Goodman said. “We’ve been battling for two years, and it’s a solid win for us. I also give a lot of credit to Northern Potter (1-3, 1-5). They’re a good team.”
Deyarmin finished with eight points, six steals and six rebounds, while Sabrina Tanner recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Hubbers had trailed 21-12 at halftime, but rallied in the third quarter to tie the game at 25 entering the fourth. From there, the teams drew evenly until Deyarmin’s clutch three.
“We struggled in the second quarter and dug ourselves into a hole going into halftime,” Goodman said. “Coming out in the third, we stressed how important it was to just cut the lead in half if we could, but the girls dug in on defense, created some turnovers and outscored (NoPo) 13-4 to tie it going into the fourth.”
Erin Herzog added six points and six rebounds, Danielle Nelson logged three steals and a block and Coryn McClain blocked two shots.
McClain drew high praise from her coach for filling in for Smethport after Tanner had fouled out.
“She really gave us quality minutes off the bench,” he said.
For Northern Potter, Courtney Martin scored 10 points, and Megan Hyde added eight.
Smethport, the No. 3 team in the NTL, travels to No. 1 Port Allegany Friday night, while Northern Potter hosts Coudersport that night.
