SMETHPORT — Sophomore quarterback Noah Lent gave Smethport a dual threat advantage as they shut out Sheffield, 40-0, on the opening night of high school football action Friday.
Lent found receivers for five touchdowns and also kicked two successful PATs to give the Hubbers a home victory to get the season started.
“I thought it was a good win for our young team. I’m particularly pleased with how these guys have gelled over the last two weeks,” said third-year Smethport coach Adam Jack. “Some guys have stepped into positions they aren’t used to playing and have worked really hard to get ready for tonight’s game. In particular, Kameron Rounsville moved from fullback to center, and he had a good game for us tonight.”
The Hubbers rolled into the endzone with a little over four minutes to go in the first quarter as Noah Lent found Ryli Burrett with a 35-yard touchdown pass. Lent also kicked the PAT to put Smethport ahead 7-0.
Lent then hit Braedon Johnson with a 26-yard pass with 5:55 to go in the second quarter and kicked another successful PAT to record a 14-0 advantage. Lent’s 18-yard pass to Burritt with 5:18 to go and 46-yard pass to Braedon Johnson just before the half gave the Hubbers a 26-0 lead at halftime.
Neither the PAT kick nor the two-point conversion attempted were successful.
Third quarter scoring for the Hubbers came from a 32-yard run by Hunter Lent at the 9:12 mark and a 16-yard pass to Bryent Johnson from Noah Lent. The final score of the night for Smethport came on a safety to bring the final points tally to 40-0.
“Defensively, we have some things to shore up, but we made plays on defense as well,” Jack noted.
Leading the Hubber defense were Travis Cooney with 11 tackles, and Logan Christie with eight tackles and one interception.
Sheffield’s Jihad Bennett had six carries for 49 yards.
Smethport (1-0) has a bye week before returning to action Sept. 6 as they travel to Port Allegany. Sheffield (0-1), meanwhile, will host Union/A-C Valley (0-1) in a Saturday face-off next week.
