Getting transported to an alien spaceship is one way to bring a new perspective to one’s earthly problems.
“Space Pirates!: A New Children’s Musical” tells the story of four human children who unwittingly get transported onto a spaceship of aliens that are collecting artifacts from planet Earth. The large transport attracts the attention of a group of space pirates, who assume the transport is treasure, not children.
Twenty campers from Bradford Little Theatre’s annual summer camp program will bring the musical to life this weekend from Friday through Sunday.
The musical is Bonnie Leposa’s directorial debut. Leposa has volunteered to do stage work for BLT for years prior to donning the director’s hat this summer.
“It’s really fun. It’s very challenging,” Leposa explained of her new role.
She said the cast includes 20 campers between the ages of 6 and 13. The campers have been working hard since July 8 to pull together the musical.
The 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds have “a lot of nervous energy,” Leposa noted, and the camp is an opportunity to learn about how to be on stage and how to be still.
“They’re doing a great job,” said Leposa.
The young performers have been quite busy these past three weeks.
“These kids do everything,” said stage manager Jessica Ann Coder, who explained that — in addition to learning about singing and acting and memorizing lines — the campers are involved with costumes, sets and props.
Also involved are producer Hannah Leposa and about seven other adults volunteers, including two previous campers.
“This is our fourth (camp), so we’re getting the hang of it,” said Coder.
It will be the first time many of the children get to perform under the theater’s new lights, she noted.
Showtimes will be 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Togi’s Playhouse at 18 Welch Ave.
As Saturday is also the day of the Kids & Cancer Motorcycle Benefit Run — to be held for the first time in East Bradford along East Main Street — audience members coming to Togi’s Playhouse can park either at the mini mall or on sides streets behind the theater.
The musical is expected to last around an hour, and there is no intermission, said Coder. Punch and cookies will be served, too.
Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door or at BLT’s outlets, Graham Florist and Togi’s Family Restaurant.
