EMPORIUM — Cameron County and Coudersport each took a win and a loss from Tuesday’s back-and-forth Northern Allegheny League doubleheader.
Coudy (8-4, 7-1) won game one 7-6 in extra innings, and then Cameron County (6-5, 5-3) took game two 10-7.
In game one, Coudersport jumped out to a 4-2 lead before Cameron County responded with a two-run fourth to knot things up at 4-4.
The Lady Falcons regained a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth, but then Cameron County answered with a two-run bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Shaelyn Black singled home Paiton Whipple to give the Lady Falcons a 7-6 advantage, and then Black retired the Lady Red Raiders side in order to secure the 7-6 victory.
“We fought hard the whole way through that first game. We just happened to come up short in the end,” Cameron County coach Jocelyn Wensel said. “We couldn’t get the bats around in the bottom of the eighth. We were connecting, but we just couldn’t get on base.”
Coudersport was led by Rosalyn Page, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Whipple went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, and Black went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
In the circle, Black pitched all eight innings. She allowed six runs on eight hits and six walks, and she struck out 12 batters.
Cameron County wasn’t short on offense either. Taylor Lamont and Alyvia McKimm each homered for the Lady Red Raiders, and Haley Rees had a double.
Lamont went 1-for-5 with two RBI in the game, and McKimm went 2-for-4 with a home run. McKimm scored three times and had one RBI.
Laila Smith was in the circle for Cameron County. She gave up seven runs on 12 hits and two walks, and she fanned six batters.
In game two, Coudy jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but Cameron County roared back with a six-run top of the second to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
“That made the game for us right there,” Wensel said. “Once we got on them, our girls saw they could score and hit, and after coming off a tough loss, they wanted it. I think that helped us get on the ball.”
The Lady Red Raiders tacked on two runs in the fourth and another two in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead, but then Coudersport made a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh to draw to within 10-7.
However, that rally came up short in the end, and Cameron County held on to hand Coudersport its first conference loss of the season.
Cameron County’s 10-run outburst was largely due to the big bat of Smith, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles. She plated four RBI during the game.
“Laila was able to wait on the ball a little more tonight. She waited on her pitch, was very selective and was able to hit the gaps,” Wensel said of her slugger.
Smith’s performance was buoyed by three RBI from Haley Rees on a 1-for-5 performance and a 2-for-3 performance from McKimm, who doubled and had one RBI. Lamont added a 2-for-4 game and scored twice.
Smith pitched the entire second game, as well, and gave up seven runs on eight hits and four walks. She struck out eight batters.
Coudersport picked up big performances from Chelsey Streich and Kaylee VanWhy in the batter’s box. Streich went 2-for-3 with a double, and VanWhy went 1-for-4 with a three-RBI double.
Streich started in the circle for the Lady Falcons and lasted 3.1 innings. She gave up six runs on four hits and three walks and struck out seven. Emma Saulter came on in relief for Streich and finished the final 3.2 innings. She surrendered four runs on six hits and four walks, and struck out four.
Cameron County is back in action today and tomorrow in the Elk County Tournament, and Coudersport takes on Otto-Eldred on Friday.
Otto-Eldred 13, Northern Potter 0, 5 innings
ULYSSES — Abby Wolfe continued her stellar freshman season in the circle for Otto-Eldred by no-hitting Northern Potter and sending the Lady Terrors to their seventh double-digit win of the year.
Wolfe struck out seven and gave up just a walk through five innings for the Lady Terrors (12-1, 8-1), which have outscored its opponents 24-0 over the last two days.
At the plate, Emmalee Sheeler, Autumn Smith and Kayley Heller all tripled for O-E, and Haylee Frederick added a double.
“Had another good pitching outing,” Otto-Eldred head coach Roger Veilleux said. “ And we were also strong defensively.”
Mikayla Hyde gave up 10 hits, six walks and struck out five batters for Northern Potter (2-5, 2-5). The Panthers have allowed eight runs or more in five of its seven games.
Otto-Eldred looks to keep its hot start to the season going on Thursday against Bradford.
Port Allegany 7, Oswayo Valley 3
SHINGLEHOUSE — Kierra Keck and Cailey Barnett combined for five hits at the plate to power the Lady Gators offense en route to their second consecutive win.
Kaylee Boyd threw a complete game in the circle for Port Allegany (2-4, 2-3) and was able to get out of several big jams.
According to Oswayo Valley head coach Tim Morey, the Lady Green Wave left 14 runners on base — including two innings with the bases loaded and no runs coming in to score.
“If you leave that many on base, you’re probably not going to have a chance to win,” Morey said. “We really didn’t hit the ball well. Slow pitching and we couldn’t figure out the timing at the plate.”
Karina West struck out nine batters for Oswayo Valley, which has dropped seven straight games after a season-opening win over Smethport.
West added a double and two RBI at the plate.
Port Allegany, meanwhile, has now posted back-to-back victories after getting outscored 40-2 over its first three losses of the year.
Kane 8, Smethport 4
KANE — Smethport jumped out to a 4-0 lead but couldn’t hold on, and the Kane Lady Wolves took Tuesday’s matchup 8-4.
Smethport (0-7) led 4-0 through three innings, but Kane (4-5) hung six runs in the fourth frame and tacked on two more in the sixth to secure the victory.
The Lady Hubbers had their best offensive performance of the season, though. Sam Tanner went 2-for-4, Rylee Crowley went 3-for-4 with a double and Lizzie Ruffner added a 3-for-4 day for Smethport.
But it was Kane’s Kennedy Hines that stole the show with a 2-for-4 day that included four RBI.
“It’s the best game we’ve played all year. We out-hit them, but we left eight runners stranded,” Smethport coach John Peterson said. “We left too many runners on base.”
Kane starting pitcher Kelsey Alexander pitched a complete game, and surrendered 11 hits and two walks and struck out three.
Smethport pitcher Coryn McClain lasted the entire game, as well, and gave up seven hits and 11 walks and fanned one batter.
“Kane played a great defensive game,” Peterson noted. “We hit the ball hard, but they made some great defensive plays. We showed some life today, though. We’re finally starting to hit the ball and play decent softball.”
Smethport plays Thursday at Galeton, and Kane visits DuBois Central Catholic on Thursday.
