On The Side Books at 10 Kennedy St. will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Literary parties at independent bookstores around the country are free and open to the public.
At On The Side Books, free swag bags for kids, while supplies last, and free swag bags valued at over $75 will be given to the first 20 people to make a $20 purchase. The bags will be given one per customer.
A variety of raffles and giveaways will be held throughout the day, including a basket donated by local author Ann McCauley. In addition, McCauley, author of “Mother Love,” “Runaway Grandma” and “Pressure Cooker Christmas,” will be in the store from noon to 2 p.m. for a meet and greet. Richard Marcott, author of “The View from the Rigging: Memoirs of a Coast Guard Career’ will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. to meet participants.
“We have a full day of fun planned here at the bookstore. I have a large selection of new books that are marked down to $5 each and I’m also offering a 15 percent discount on qualifying special orders for new books,” said store owner, Heather Whittemore. “I’m so thankful to the community for supporting my small business for the past two years.”
The store will also offer exclusive day-of merchandise created especially for Independent Bookstore Day by major publishers and authors. Since its inception in 2014, more than 200 authors have demonstrated their support for independent bookstores by donating work for Bookstore Day.
The fifth-annual National Independent Bookstore Day is sponsored, in part, by Penguin Random House, Ingram, and The American Booksellers Association.
