SMETHPORT — Otto-Eldred’s Chris Connelly ripped a pair of home runs and Cole Sebastian added a third round-tripper to lead the Terrors to a 15-5 victory over Smethport in high school baseball action on Thursday.
Connelly opened the scoring with a three-run shot in the top of the first inning and the Hubbers (1-1, 1-1) were never able to recover.
The Terrors (3-0, 2-0) pushed their lead to 7-0 with a four-run third frame and added a score in the fourth to go up 8-0.
“They (O-E) took the three-run lead in the first and we really never got our bats going until the 5th and 6th innings,” said Smethport coach Colby Austin.
The Hubbers erased the goose egg off their side of the board with a run in the fifth, while O-E padded its advantage to 13-1 with five runs in the sixth and threatened to shorten the game.
Smethport, however, had other ideas and plated four runs in the sixth to trail 13-5 extending the contest to the full seven innings.
“Travis Cooney got us started with a single and then Nate Hallowell hit a two-run double in the sixth,” Austin explained.
Starting pitcher Andrew Sheeler picked up the mound win and Jacob Merry pitched the 6th and 7th frames to finish off the game. The Hubbers actually out-hit the Terrors, 9-8, but took too long to get started.
Starter Grant Ognen was the losing pitcher, while three other hurlers spent time on the mound as well.
“Otto is a nice team and they have good hitters,” Austin pointed out.
Smethport returns to action on April 5 at Coudersport.
