The cause of a house fire that destroyed a Keating Township home early Monday morning has been ruled accidental.
At 2:07 a.m. Monday, a fire was reported at 18292 U.S. Route 6, Keating Township, state police fire marshal Cpl. Greg Agosti stated.
According to Agosti, two adults and two children were home at the time of the fire, but all escaped uninjured. The victim is listed on a press release from state police as tenant Stacy Miller of East Smethport, and Duffy Inc. of East Smethport is listed as the owner.
Agosti said damage was estimated to be over $100,000.
The National Weather Service reported that the temperature was minus 4 in nearby Bradford about the time the Smethport Fire Department was called to the scene of the fire. Fresh snowfall nearly a foot high left many roadsides and fire hydrants buried.
On social media, the Smethport Fire Department reported that department chief Wayne Foltz arrived at the home, confirming the fire and requesting a second alarm.
Several departments were called into the cold to lend a hand: Hamlin Township Volunteer Fire Department, Star Hose Co. #1 of Port Allegany, Norwich Township VFD and a Priority Care Ambulance, the Smethport department stated. Also, the Rew VFD stood by at the Smethport station. The fire department reported Smethport Borough Utilities and the gas company also came to the fire scene.
Not only did the occupants make it out safely, the family pets were safe, too, according to the Smethport firefighters.
The fire department stated the state police were brought to investigate as “per standard protocol.”
At 12:43 p.m. Monday, an engine and crew from Smethport were called back to the fire scene for a report of a rekindle.
Foltz did not return a call seeking information.
