SMETHPORT — The Smethport Hubbers apparently just needed a few minutes in the locker room to get their offense clicking.
After holding just a 26-23 halftime lead, the Hubbers equaled their first half point total with a 26-point explosion in the third quarter en route to a 67-53 North Tier League win Tuesday.
“We played just a really great third quarter,” Smethport head coach Jay Acker said. “First of all, we made shots which really got us going. Our defense stepped it up, and did a great job on the boards.”
It was an offensive shootout between Smethport’s Caleb Lutz and Northern Potter’s Carter Anderson.
Lutz ended up with a game-high 30 points for the Hubbers (6-5, 6-2), which stayed in third place in the NTL with the victory.
“Caleb, he made his shots tonight,” Acker said. “He handled pressure; he had some good free throws in the fourth quarter to finish.”
Also for Smethport, the Hubbers’ Ian Woodruff picked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Smethport travels to Galeton on Thursday.
Anderson sank four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 27 for Northern Potter (2-12, 1-8).

Elk County Catholic 64, Curwensville 48
CURWENSVILLE — Ten Elk Catholic players put points on the board to lead the unbeaten Crusaders to their 13th straight victory, a 64-48 decision over Curwensville on Tuesday.
Leading the winners were Alec Wehler with 11 points and Alex Breindel with 10.
Elk Catholic held a 25 point (55-30) lead after three quarters and the best the Tide could do was draw within 16 at the buzzer and following a 14-point scoring advantage over the final 12 minutes of the game.
Despite the seemingly easy win, Crusaders coach Aaron Straub was not entirely pleased with his team’s overall effort.
“Curwensville played hard and played well. For most of the game we simply went through the motions,” Straub noted. “We always tell the team there are two things that you control, your effort and your attitude.
“We have 9 regular season games left and we are entering the most difficult part of our schedule. If we want to take steps on becoming a better basketball team we certainly have the opportunity to do that over the next four weeks,” he added.
First thing’s first, however. The Crusaders return to action on Friday in a key game at Ridgway.
“It will be interesting to see how we come out on Friday night. It will be interesting to see what improvements we make over the next two practices. We will need to get better. We will need to be at our best. We will need to improve,” Straub emphasized.
