Coudy routs Smethport; Austin boys score season high

COUDERSPORT — It was set up to be a trap game for the Falcons.

But the night before Friday’s huge regular season tilt against Ridgway, Coudersport handled its business against Smethport with ease, earning a 83-33 victory and staying perfect on the season.

Owen Chambers once again led the scoring barrage for the Falcons (6-0, 6-0), pouring in 34 points and draining five 3-pointers. Hayden Keck hit nine field goals for 22 points for Coudy, which exploded for 45 points in the first half.

Dillion Keglovits controlled the paint for the Falcons, picking up 13 rebounds and six points.

Smethport, meanwhile was held to just 14 points in the first half. Caleb Lutz had 15 to lead the Hubbers (3-4, 3-2).

Thursday’s win sends the Falcons into tonight’s highly anticipated Class AA meeting against Ridgway undefeated.

The last time the two teams met was in last year’s District 9 title game, where Coudersport handed Ridgway its first loss of the season.

As for the rematch, Coudy head coach Brian Furman kept his thoughts rather close to the vest.

“It should be a good game (tonight,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

The Gators controlled play early leading 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and 25-21 and then things began breaking down.

“We were actually up 10-11 points and then had a cold spell,” said Port coach Jeff Stuckey. “They came up with some steals and layups to take the lead by one at the end of the third and we just could not get back into it.  At the end they just stalled the ball and we had to foul. It was a hard fought game.”
