Boys hoops: Stuckey drops 39; Kane nearly stuns Elk

BOLIVAR, N.Y. — For one quarter, the Bolivar-Richburg boys basketball team “did everything it wanted,” according to coach Jeff Margeson.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to a 16-11 quarter. They’d also done a decent job of corralling Port Allegany leading scorers Howie Stuckey and Jordan Card, keeping those two at five and four points, respectively.

And then, that duo went off, particularly Stuckey.

In one of the top scoring efforts on the Big 30 boys side so far this season, Stuckey drained seven 3-pointers and poured in 39 points to guide the Gators to a 76-62 non-league triumph on Wednesday.

The Port A senior racked up 18 of those points in the second quarter, when the Gators (4-4) outscored B-R 28-13 to take control. Card finished with 22 points in the win.

“Stuckey couldn’t miss,” Margeson said. “He would pull up from anywhere; we’d have a hand in his face, too, and he’d make it. It was impressive. The referees even said that they’d never seen anything like it.”

Riley Danaher and Adam Jones both had 15 points while Hudson Evingham added 10 for the Wolverines (4-4).

“They outhustled us,” Margeson went on. “We’re going to close the book on that one.”

KANE — Regis Wortman (26) and Alex Breindel (19) combined to score all but 14 of Elk County Catholic’s points as the Crusaders (7-0) held off a valiant upset effort from Kane on Wednesday.

Kane actually took the lead in the game, 59-58, on a 3-point from Chad Greville with less than two minutes to play. But Carter Lindemuth hit a clutch layup with 1:10 remaining to put his team up for good and provide the final points of the ballgame.

“It was a good win against a team that played very well this evening,” ECC head coach Aaron Straub said. “Kane shot it well, Greville played extremely well and very composed, and Kane kept battling back.”

Greville tied Wortman for the high scoring mark in the game with 26.

Wortman’s biggest contribution in the game came when he dropped 12 points in the third quarter to help ECC erase a two-point halftime deficit and a 10-0 run Kane went on to end the second quarter.

“When we played well tonight we looked good,” Straub added. “Got some transition baskets and our offense looked good.”

FRIENDSHIP, N.Y. — Carter Steadman pumped in 21 points and Noah Wichert posted 20 to power Oswayo Valley.

While the Green Wave jumped out to an 18-2 lead, it was a stunning differential at the free throw line that allowed OV to maintain a sizable advantage.

OV shot an incredible 46 free throws in a 32-minute game, draining 27 (with Steadman going 9-for-16 and Wichert finishing 10-of-18), while Friendship went 3-for-8 at the line.

The Eagles were whistled for 32 fouls compared to 11 for the Green Wave. Five Friendship players fouled out, leaving it to play the final few minutes with just four players.

Blake Hewitt and Tyson Musselwhite both had 12 points for the Eagles (1-8).

ULYSSES — Gabe Conway registered 16 points and Devin Serafini had 15 to lift Bucktail to a non-league win Wednesday.

Bucktail used a 13-7 third quarter to get back into the game before hanging on after trailing by five at halftime.

NoPo missed a game-tying free throw with 3.5 seconds left and got the ball back with an offensive rebound, but missed a game-winning look inside at the buzzer.

Bucktail went 13-of-27 at the line while the Panthers, who received 16 points from Holden Cowburn and 10 from Ezra Sprow, were hampered by a 14-of-31 effort.

“We had our chances,” NoPo coach Derek Erway said. “We had a good look inside, but couldn’t get it to fall.”
