DUKE CENTER, Pa. — Tied 24-24 at halftime, the Bradford boys basketball team found the edge in the third quarter and held on to defeat the hosts in Otto-Eldred’s Randy Stebbins Memorial Tournament Saturday night.
The Owls (3-1) outscored O-E 9-5 in a low-scoring third, but Bradford really started to pull away with strong free-throw shooting in the fourth.
Bradford went a superb 18-of-22 from the charity stripe in the game, and had eight makes over the final eight minutes.
Tyler Gigliotti led that success at the line, going 9-of-10 and finishing with a game-high 17 points.
“He’s a mentally tough kid, and I’m confident in him and all of our guys at the free-throw line right now,” Bradford coach Brian Hobbs said. “That is one of our strengths to start the season and we are going to play to that a little bit.”
Hobbs also credited some of his depth players for keeping the game close in the first half. Bradford got into foul trouble early, having to sit three of their starters with multiple fouls in the second quarter.
But the Owls found a way to defeat the Terrors and win the tournament.
“Otto is always going to give us their best effort,” Hobbs said. “They play hard and are well-prepared. This game was good for us.”
Bradford won its opening game of the tournament over Portville, 66-33.
“It was a transition from the game against Portville where we controlled it for three quarters to a game we had to kind of grind out. We were on our toes and had to play hard all game.”
Bradford will face two tough tests this week, first with DuBois Central Catholic at home on Tuesday and then on the road against Johnsonburg Friday.
For O-E (1-3), Andrew Sheeler scored 15 points and Cameron Grigsby had 10.
