SMETHPORT — The Smethport Hubbers held on late for a 39-35 win over Galeton on Thursday night in a game described by Smethport coach Jay Acker as “a nail-biter”.
Leading the Hubbers’ (2-2, 2-0) attack were Caleb Lutz with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers, Eric Szarowicz with nine points, and Conner Alfieri with eight.
The Tigers were able to keep the game close courtesy of Evan Brooks’ 15 points and Isaiah Shuemaker’s 11.
“I would say we had the best first half we’ve ever played (this year),” said Acker. “The first half, I don’t think we even made a mistake. Costa and Alfieri were great tonight.”
Acker added that foul trouble in the second half of the game gave Galeton (3-1, 1-1) a shot at taking over the lead , but the Hubbers held on despite getting outscored 11-3 in the fourth quarter.
Acker gave credit to the Tigers and called them “a tough team.”
“They have size, they have good guards, they came to play extremely hard. We came to weather their storm and came out with a really good win,” Acker said.
Smethport returns to the court Monday against Austin.
