Life and Independence for Today, a St. Marys-based Center for Independent Living, will make a presentation about disability awareness, sensitivity and etiquette Oct. 24 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
The presentation, which will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Mukaiyama University Room, will also include interactive simulations for attendees. The activities will simulate impairments to vision, hearing or mobility. The public is invited.
The Pitt-Bradford Office of Disability Resources is sponsoring the event in honor of Disabilities Awareness Month.
“We all need to be informed about disabilities,” said Carma Horner, disability resources and services coordinator for Pitt-Bradford. “It is the only group of people protected by Civil Rights legislation that anyone, at any time, could become a member of. You never know when you or someone you know could have an accident, illness or situation that results in a disability.”
LIFT serves Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, McKean and Potter counties. It is one of 400 Centers for Independent Living created by the U.S. Congress as part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1963. LIFT provides advocacy, independent living skills, information and referrals, and peer support for those with disabilities.
