Week 3: Smethport tops Golden Tide to remain perfect

CURWENSVILLE — Blake Kinner rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown to lead Smethport to a long-awaited 20-7 victory over Curwensville on the Golden Tide’s home field Friday night.

“It was a great win for our kids and this program in Curwensville,” said Hubbers’ coach Adam Jack. “Our kids knew they would give us everything we could handle. The kiis played against that adversity and came out on the winning side.”

Kinner, who carried the ball 13 times, scored the first points of the game when he broke free and raced 41 yards for the touchdown. Noah Costa kicked the PAT to make it 7-0.

Quarterback Grant Ognen put the visitors up by two scores in the second period when he found Braedon Johnson open from two yards out. Costa’s boot was true and Smethport was in control 14-0.

The Tide’s Cole Bressler cut that in half when he broke free for a 35-yard scoring run and Jacob Mullins kicked the PAT to send the teams into the locker room at halftime separated by just seven points, 14-7.

Smethport’s defense turned up the heat in the second half, and the Hubbers’ offense added an insurance score on Noah Lent’s four-yard TD run. The PAT wass no good, but the Hubbers had all the points they needed for the 20-7 win.

    Otto-Eldred 47, Union/A-C Valley 25

DUKE CENTER — Quarterback Cole Sebastian threw for three touchdowns and Cameron Magee took an interception and a kickoff return back for touchdowns to lead Otto-Eldred to a 47-25 win over Union/A-C Valley on Friday night.

Sebastian connected on 13 of 23 passes for 198 yards and found the end zone through the air on aerials of 18 yards to Magee, 29 yards to Steven Langworthy, and 16 yards to Chase Sebastian.

Magee, meanwhile, put the first points of the game on the board by taking an interception back 42 yards. Before the first quarter concluded he returned a Union kickoff 73 yards for the score and wrapped up his night with the TD pass reception.

In the second quarter Cole Sebastian returned an interception 42 yards as the Terrors built a 26-13 lead at the break.

Nolan Cumberland (4 yards) and Luke Bowser (7 yards) accounted for Union’s two scores of the first half.

In the third period Cumberland’s second touchdown run of the game cut into the O-E lead, but Cole Sebastian nullified that with his strike to Langworthy.

In the final 12 minutes of play Chase Sebastian hauled in a TD pass and Colton Gietler broke free from 20 yards out for six-points.

Union tacked on a final score on Cuthbertson’s 60 yard kickoff return following the Sebastian-to-Sebastian TD pass for the final score.

Chris Connelly kicked three extra points and Brady Valerius ran for a PAT for the Terrors.

The score looks like O-E rolled to an easy win, but not so according to head coach Troy Cook.

“It was hard fought and went back and forth early,” said Cook. “We came out kind of flat after our big win last week. In the second half we got focused, cleaned up some things and rallied to put this game away.”

Otto-Eldred returns to action next Friday night at Smethport.
