SMETHPORT — A Port Allegany man is in McKean County Jail for allegedly obtaining about $20,000 in public assistance through fraudulent means.
Jeffrey Paul Evens, 44, of 138 Combs Creek Road, is charged with two third-degree felony counts of welfare fraud.
According to court records, between March 17, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2016, Evens failed to report income from self employment to the McKean County Assistance Office, saying he was injured and unable to work.
During that time, he reported to the IRS that his company was making $14,000 in profit, the court records read. Evens allegedly told investigators he failed to report the income intentionally so he could obtain assistance. He obtained $13,268.80 in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits, and $7,475 in food stamps, court records allege.
Evens was arraigned Friday before District Judge Bill Todd and remanded to jail in lieu of $75,000 straight bail. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
