Slow start dooms Owls in loss to Warren

WARREN — The Bradford boys had a tough time getting their offense jump-started on Monday night as the Owls fell to Warren in a non-league matchup 62-45.

“We got off to a slow start again; I think they were up 10-0 at one point,” Owls coach Brian Hobbs said. “Slow starts are kind of our theme right now.”

Andrew Davidson scored a game-high 18 points for Warren, while Caleb Ei and Griffin Suppa both finished with 11.

Hobbs sees the team’s struggles on defense as the main culprit behind their recent run of play.

“We’re just not very good defensively,” he said. “We’re struggling to figure out who we are as a team. We’ve got to get back to the drawing board and back to fundamentals. We need to try to play a more hard-nosed, man-to-man type of defense.

“On offense we’ve got to be more efficient and selective with our shots,” he added.

Steve Knowlton was one of the lone bright spots for the Owls, as he finished with a team-high 14 points.

“Steve Knowlton played a heck of game,” Hobbs said. “He played hard and a did a lot of good things. He was a competitor tonight; he wanted to win.”

Dan Manion added 10 points in the loss.

The Owls — who fall to 2-3 on the year — will play their home opener on Friday when they host Johnsonburg.

    NORTH TIER LEAGUE

Cameron County 55, Oswayo Valley 49

SHINGLEHOUSE — A career-high 28 points from Gavin Babcock weren’t enough for the Green Wave on Monday, as Marcus Brown’s 25 points and 13 rebounds helped lead the Red Raiders to a come-from-behind victory.

After trailing for most of the first half, Cameron County rebounded and was able to outlast OV down the stretch. Adam Shaffer pitched in 14 points for the Red Raiders.

“We played well in the first half,” OV coach Clark Cummings said. “We had some opportunities in the second half but we didn’t take advantage. We need to be able to take better advantage of certain situations.

“Marcus Brown was huge for them. They’re a good team.”

Babcock’s 28 points came in large part thanks to six 3-pointers.

“Gavin hit four 3s in the first quarter; he really stepped up huge for us tonight,” Cummings said. “We just couldn’t get anything going offensively other than him.”

Oswayo Valley (3-3 overall, 0-1 in NTL play) is off until Tuesday, Jan. 2 when the Green Wave visit Port Allegany.

    NON-LEAGUE

    Johnsonburg 49, Coudersport 46

JOHNSONBURG — The Rams held a high-powered Coudersport offense in check as Johnsonburg was able to hold on to a close decision.

Austin Green led the Rams with 19 points, while Kacey Raubenstrauch and Dilen Surra both scored 11.

Owen Chambers led Coudy with 19 points, while Jared Green added 18.

The Falcons were held to just six points in the first quarter and 17 in the first half.

“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well,” Coudy coach Brian Furman said. “Johnsonburg’s defense was pretty strong tonight and on the other side they were able to knock down some shots.”

Coudersport (1-1) will visit Port Allegany tonight.

    Jasper-Troupsburg (N.Y.) 54, Northern Potter 43

ULYSSES — A big third quarter rally helped Jasper-Troupsburg overcome an early deficit to defeat the Panthers on Monday.

J-T outscored Northern Potter 19-4 in the third frame to take control of the game. Connor Van Gordon scored a game-high 21 points in the victory.

“We’re a young team right now,” NoPo coach Gary Ransom said. “We’re just trying to put an entire game together.”

Foster Kosa (15 points) and Carter Anderson (14) both finished in double figures for the Panthers.

Northern Potter (0-3) will be back in action tonight when the Panthers host Smethport.
