WEATHERVANE: A few months back, we had a column about a historic Bradford weathervane.
The weathervane sat atop the Erie Passenger Train Station starting in 1890 and ended up in the possession of Bradford artist Helen Hume in the 1950s. The Hume family set the weathervane up for auction in April in Chicago.
Sally Costik, curator of the Bradford Landmark Society, contacted us Friday with an update:
“Today we finally found out who bought it — Stuart Ellison, former Bradfordian, who graduated from BHS in 1966. He came into the Landmark and showed us photos of the weathervane. He lives in Chicago, but plans to restore the weathervane and put it at his summer home in Wisconsin.
“So, the weathervane is in good hands.”
Neat.
ROCKS: Tony Falconi from Lewis Run called us a few days ago.
“I just wanted to let you know I found one,” he said. “I found a painted stone last week on the white gravel as you enter the Lewis Run Post Office.”
We’ve been talking about the Kindness Rock Project — which goes by many names — where people decorate rocks and leave them out as little gifts to be found by passersby.
Finding the rock made Tony’s day.
“I’d seen it, and it gave me a laugh,” he said.
Tony wondered how many people passed the little treasure without seeing it before he found it. He tells us he showed it to his friends, then gave it to his grandson.
PAY PHONE:Here’s a questioning we’re pondering — are there any pay phones left in Bradford? We’ve seen the one near the front office in Bradford Area High School, and started to wonder if there were any more. Readers?
