As the McKean County Fair draws closer, the fair queen candidates are preparing for a week full of events.
So far, the girls have participated in multiple events, including the 4-H horse show in Smethport and Old Home Days in Duke Center.
Maya Ervin, Miss Bradford, is the daughter of Bradley and Terri Ervin of Bradford.
She plans to go to college to major in either archeology or political science.
Some of her extracurricular activities include being president of Bradford Area High School’s DECA club, Model UN and National Art Society.
As far as involvement with the community, Irvin has involvement in the Studio B Dance Academy, Girl Scouts and volunteering at the Red Cross.
Her work experience includes working at her father’s vending business, Creative Coffee and Vending, as well as babysitting.
She entered the poster contest for the fair, as well as her and her family being involved in various 4-H and agricultural exhibits.
Mackenzie Witherell, Miss Kane, is the daughter of Dan and Suzie Witherell of Kane.
She plans to attend college and major in psychology, with a focus on childhood counseling.
Her extracurricular activities include marching band, choraliers and serving as class officer for three years.
Along with this, Witherell has also performed in two musicals, the Wizard of Oz and Footloose.
Her involvement with her community has included KARE for Kane and the Special Olympics.
She danced with Studio K for 13 years.
Rame Hulett, Miss Otto-Eldred, is the daughter of Beth and Brandon Freer of Eldred.
She plans to attend college with a major in music.
Her extracurricular activities include volleyball, choir and theater arts.
Along with this, she also plays volleyball for Octane Terrors Volleyball team, which this summer competed in Minneapolis for Nationals.
Rame often sings the national anthem at her school’s sporting events, the Old Bradford Speedway and the McKean County raceway.
She has also performed at the McKean County Fair talent show for the past two years.
This summer, Rame volunteered for the World War II Museum in Eldred.
Makenzie Burr, Miss Port Allegany, is the daughter of Matthew and Nadine Burr.
She plans to attend college and major in special education.
Her extracurricular activities include choir, volleyball, softball and dance.
Burr volunteers for her church, taught dance, played volleyball for Octane, as well as softball for Aftershock.
Emily Treat, Miss Smethport, is the daughter of Edward and Susan Treat.
She plans to attend college with an interest in health care.
She is involved in numerous school activities including National Honor Society, Student Council, cheerleading, choir and being drum major for her marching band.
Emily has worked as a babysitter.
Her participation with the fair includes parking cars, selling raffle tickets and entering exhibits.
Ally Carpenter is the fair queen coordinator, and has been for the last five years.
In the past, she has also been a judge.
She first became involved with the program when she was Miss Kane, and then later McKean County Fair Queen in 2008.
“I really look forward to working with the girls each year,” said Carpenter. “The most enjoyable aspect to me is watching how the fair queen program helps them grow socially and develop their confidence. It’s a really unique experience.”
The fair queen candidates will be participating in the Big 30 parade this Saturday, as well as the Swedish Festival on Aug. 12.
The McKean County Fair will be held from Aug. 12 through 19.
